COVID-19 brought a lot of changes to our lives. Over the past year, we’ve grown accustomed to those changes which has included mask wearing and social distancing. Of course, you can’t wear a regular mask and play a brass instrument, so the next best thing is to invest in a bell cover—or bust out an old t-shirt. Luckily, I’ve put together a list of the five trombone bell covers just for you!

In short, all the brands you come to expect in music seem to be missing out on the bell cover craze. Though, it seems KYT Music and Protec have you covered. That said, don’t overlook what other brands like Carbinahome, Bestim Incuk, and ArtJ4U have to offer. Ultimately, whatever choice you make, you won’t be breaking the bank.

Review Criteria

If I’m going to be honest with you, my local community band has been on hiatus since the start of the pandemic. As a result, I’ve had no need for a bell cover. That said, I know other folks do, so I figured I’d simplify the search process for you all.

When I research the best products, I like to leverage the various filtering features of Amazon to limit my search. For instance, I used the following settings to generate this list of the best tenor trombone bell covers:

Search Terms: Trombone Bell Cover

Department: Musical Instruments

Average Customer Review: 4+ Stars

As always, I make sure to sort the products by average customer review, so I know I’m getting the best product first.

5 Best Bell Covers

In this list, we’ll take a look at the five best tenor trombone bell covers that I could find on Amazon. Feel free to share your favorites as well.

#1. KYT Music Instrument Bell Cover – $

Coming in at number one on the list is a very affordable bell cover by KYT Music. According to their product page, this bell cover is 8 inches in diameter, so it should fit snuggly on most tenor trombones. In addition, it’s washable, so you can use it again and again.

Like most bell covers, this one is made of an elastic material, so it should form to the shape of your bell. As an added bonus, the material is double layered and includes a pocket for removable air filters.

All-in-all, this looks like a pretty good bell cover that even promises to limit effects on tone. Likewise, folks seem to be quite pleased with it. Though, there were a few complaints of it not meeting the strictest of safety requirements. As a result, it may be a good idea to use this bell cover in addition to a musicians mask.

#2. Protec Instrument Bell Cover – $

If you’re not a fan of the KYT Music bell cover for whatever reason, Protec makes one that is almost identical. Much like the other bell cover, this one features two layers of fabric which is washable. Likewise, it’s also elastic, so it should fit over a variety of bell sizes.

As far as I can tell, the only difference between Protec’s bell cover and KYT Music’s bell cover is the lack of a pocket for a filter. To me, that seems like a major downgrade. That said, if you don’t need the pocket, then this bell cover will work just fine.

Overall, folks seem to really like Protec’s bell cover. The only complaint I could find was the effect the bell cover has on pitch. In my experience, just about everything from mutes to ambient temperature effects the pitch of a trombone, so I see this as less of a con than a fact about the reality of being a musician. I’d recommend tuning your horn with the cover on.

#3. Carbinahome Instrument Bell Cover – $

Yet another cover in the long list of bell covers comes from Carbinhome. I’ve personally never heard of this brand, but the bell cover seems to be fairly popular.

Of course, like the previous bell covers, this one seems to have all the same features. Specifically, it’s made of an elastic felt, so it’ll stretch over a variety of bell sizes. Likewise, it’s also double layered like the previous two bell covers. In addition, it’s washable, so you can reuse it.

Like Protec’s bell cover, this one seems to lack a pocket for a filter. Again, this would be a major con for me, but you may not care. Given how affordable all of these bell covers are, you wouldn’t be losing any money by going for filter support. That said, it’s totally up to you!

Unlike the previous bell covers, I couldn’t find any negative comments about this one. Though, this manufacturer does sell several variants, so you have to make sure you get the right size (~7-9″ for a tenor trombone). I will say that this cover looks a bit more soft than some of the previous covers, so I would probably pick this one to avoid the possibility of scratches on the bell. That said, I haven’t seen anyway complain about that, but it’s definitely worth considering.

#4. Bestim Incuk Reusable Music Instrument Bell Cover – $$

Up next, we have another brand that I’ve never heard of: Bestim Incuk. My first impressions of this bell cover just from the pictures is that it’s sort of ugly. Unlike the previous bell covers that seem to be completely elastic, this looks like a pair of sweatpants on your bell.

That said, I won’t knock this bell cover as it appears to hit all the same boxes as the other bell covers. It’s washable and reusable and doesn’t effect tone according to the manufacturer.

Like the previous bell cover, you can run into some trouble if you’re not careful. It seems these manufacturers group all of the bell covers under one listing, so it’s easy to buy the wrong size. Also, it seems to be lacking a pocket for a filter, but that seems to be expected at this point.

Overall, there isn’t much to say. This bell cover is definitely the most expensive of the bell covers in this list, but it’s still very affordable. If you’re looking for something a bit uglier, this definitely the way to go.

#5. ArtJ4U Music Instrument Bell Cover – $

Last but not least, we have the Bell Cover from ArtJ4U. Up to this point, just about every bell cover has been the same. This one, however, is a bit different.

First, it’s silver! Or at the very least, they offer both silver and black. In addition, it’s the first bell cover we’ve seen in this list that’s not elastic. Instead, the mechanism they use for wrapping the fabric around the bell is a drawstring. I’m not sure why it includes a drawstring given that the entire thing is supposedly elastic, but I guess that gives you more peace of mind as it loses elasticity over time. That said, if there are any dangling plastic parts, I worry they might damage the horn.

Overall, folks seem pleased with this bell cover, and one person even said they used it in conjunction with a foam ball to make their own mute. I don’t know much about making mutes, but you can find all the information you might want to know about trombone mutes here.

Summary

As it turns out, it seems bell covers are all more or less the same. If you’re particularly picky about them, you can keep an eye out for filter pockets and drawstrings. That said, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the bell covers in this list.

As always, if you find a bell cover you really like and would like me to recommend, feel free to reach out. Otherwise, take care, and remember to always respect the brass.

Now that I have a list of the most common types of mutes for trombones, I figured I’d put together a list of the best mutes of each type. To start, let’s talk about the 5 best straight mutes for tenor trombones.

In short, you’ll get a lot of value out of the following brands: Soulo, Protec, LotFancy, Denis Wick, and Humes & Berg. If you want the best-of-the-best, go for the Soulo mute. If cost is an issue, check out the Humes & Berg mute. In any case, you can’t really go wrong with any of the mutes in this list.

Review Criteria

As always, I don’t like to put myself in the position of the expert. Sure, I could buy all these mutes and give you my opinion, but I think looking at general consensus of the music community is a lot more valuable.

As a result, when I research the best products, I like to leverage the various filtering features of Amazon to limit my search. For instance, I used the following settings to generate this list of the best tenor trombone mutes:

Search Terms: Tenor Straight Mute

Department: Trombone Mutes

Average Customer Review: 4+ Stars

As always, I make sure to sort the products by average customer review, so I know I’m getting the best product first.

5 Best Straight Mutes

In this list, we’ll take a look at the five best tenor trombone straight mutes that I could find on Amazon. Feel free to share your favorites as well.

#1. Soulo Mute SM6378 Trombone Straight Mute – Aluminum – $$$

Apologies for the lack of a picture, but the first mute on the list is the Soulo SM6378 trombone straight mute. Like many of the mutes in this list, the Soulo mute is made of metal–specifically aluminum–so it’s light. In addition, the mute is held in place by three pieces of neoprene composite cork which are meant to let air through but also safely hold the horn in place.

In terms of features, Soulo boasts that the mute always plays in tune which can be an issue with many mutes. Likewise, the design limits backpressure, so you know it’s “easy on the chops.” Finally, the mute features a ring along the bottom, so it’s easy to stand up.

But, do the reviews hold up? Turns out, yes! For instance, one customer claimed that the mute gave them extended dynamic range. Meanwhile, another customer claimed that the mute was great in any context. Overall, I’d say the Soulo tenor trombone straight mute lives up to its claims.

#2. Protec ML106 Liberty Tenor Trombone Aluminum Mute – $$

Following closely behind Soulo is the Protec ML106 tenor trombone straight mute. According to the product description, this mute offers a lot of the same features as the Soulo including:

Balance

Long-lasting cork

Limited backpressure

Aluminum

As an added bonus, this mute comes in at just under $40 which makes it almost half the price of the Soulo mute. Of course, can Protec really make a mute just as good at that price point? Let’s find out.

While browsing through the reviews, I quickly realized that most of the reviews were for their compact practice mute. However, there were a handful of reviews for the two straight mutes (small vs. large bore). For instance, one customer claimed that the mute was excellent compared to the Humes & Berg mute they had been using.

If you get the chance, I really recommend reading the reviews because they contain a lot of great information like the mute’s note range and the mute’s susceptibility to denting.

Ultimately, I’d say this a great mute if you’re looking to save some cash but still want something of quality. Of course, it depends how often you’re going to use it, so keep that in mind.

#3. LotFancy Trombone Straight Mute, Aluminum, Light-weight – $

Of all the straight mutes in this list, this is the only straight mute I’ve seen that is marketed as a practice mute. In fact, the product description straight up states that the mute “allows you to warm up quietly and practice silently at home, no worry about disturbing your neighbors, family members or pets.” I’m not sure what that implies in terms of performance quality, so keep that in mind.

In terms of reviews, a lot of customers like this mute as advertised. For instance, one customer stated that the mute allows their son to practice without bothering people.

To be honest, I don’t love the idea of practicing with a mute because it’s nothing like the real thing. That said, if it works for you, I’d say go for it!

#4. Denis Wick DW5505 Trombone Straight Mute – $$

Unlike the FancyLot mute, the Denis Wick straight mute is meant for performance. In terms of construction, this mute is made of aluminum, but they come in many different styles including:

Gold

Brass

Copper

Synthetic

Wood

While variety is nice, are the mutes actually any good? According to their customers, absolutely! For instance, one customer felt the mute had excellent sound in all registers. Beyond that, another customer said they loved this mute because it has a nice bright sound.

As a mid-range cost mute, I’d say this is a pretty solid deal. If you’re looking for a quality straight mute but don’t have enough money for the Soulo, this is probably the mute for you.

#5. Humes & Berg 151 Stonelined Straight Trombone Mute – $

Finally, we have a solid budget mute from Humes & Berg known as the Stonelined straight trombone mute. To be completely honest, this is the mute I use, so I decided to show it off in the featured image.

When I started college, I had to get a hold of a couple of mutes quickly. Of course, being a college kid, I never had the money for a nice mute, so I went the cheap route. Several years later, I still use this mute. It’s been through many concert bands, jazz bands, and pit orchestras, and I swear by it.

Oddly enough, a lot of other folks like this mute as well. In fact, I found one customer who has been using theirs since 1952. As another customer mentions, you just might not get a lot of mute opportunities, so why buy an expensive one?

As mentioned already, this is the mute I use, and I think it gets the job done. Unless you’re playing professionally, you can probably get by on this mute for a long time.

Summary

As with any list, this one comes with a few caveats. For one, there are a few brands that I felt should have made the cut but didn’t. For instance, Jo Ral is often well-respected, and they do a great job of marketing their work. As a result, I felt the Jo Ral straight mute deserved an honorable mention.

Likewise, I felt like there were other brands like Tom Crown that deserved a fair shake. For instance, the Tom Crown straight mute has some great reviews on Amazon.

Of course, the whole point of a list is to limit your choices a bit. If I wanted to overwhelm you, I would have just listed all mutes in existence.

At any rate, I hope you found this review valuable, and thanks for taking the time to read it. As always, respect the brass!

Welcome to yet another product review here on Trill Trombone. Today, we’re looking to review some of the best trombone songbooks for beginners.

In particular, I was able to find 4 solid trombone songbooks for beginners. If you’re looking for a book for a child, check out The Real Book for Beginning Elementary Band Students and The Beginning Band Fun Book by Larry Newman. Otherwise, look out for Easy Pop Melodies by Hal Leonard Corp and Easy Rock Instrumental Solos by Bill Galliford.

Review Criteria

When it comes to finding a trombone songbook for beginners, there’s just a ton to choose from. Luckily, we don’t have to rely on anyone to tell us what’s good. We just have to listen to the plethora of product reviews across the internet.

As always, I like to leverage Amazon as it has probably the largest database of products and consumer reviews. That way, we know exactly what’s good based on what people like us are saying.

To start, I usually like to dramatically narrow my search by using the following filter options:

Department: Trombone Songbooks

Music Skill Level: Beginner

Average Customer Review: 4+ Stars

Then, I like to sort all of the products by average customer review, so we know we’re getting the best products. In the next section, we’ll take a look at the top 7 songbooks that come up in that search.

4 Best Beginner Trombone Songbooks

When I put together this article, I found that there are a lot of different trombone songbooks that are targeted at beginners. For instance, Larry Newman put together a few excellent songbooks for elementary band students. Of course, there are other books which get students interested in music through pop and rock music. In other words, there a tons of ways to get started.

Naturally, the point of this article is to put together a list of some of the best books that you can find. If you know of any excellent books that didn’t make the list, let me know! Otherwise, let’s get to the list!

#1. The Real Book for Beginning Elementary Band Students (Trombone) – $

Up first on the list is The Real Book for Beginning Elementary Band Students (Trombone): Seventy Famous Songs Using Just Six Notes by Larry Newman. If you’re not familiar with Larry, he’s long been involved in music education for kids since 1986 (according to his LinkedIn profile).

At any rate, he put together a few trombone songbooks for beginners, and The Real Book happens to be the most popular songbook on Amazon. As the title suggests, The Real Book contains 70 famous songs written with 6 notes or less. To aid in playing, the music notation is slightly oversized. In addition, each song is printed twice: once with the note letters inside the notes and once with regular notes.

If you happen to have an interest in any other instruments, this book may also exist for them. As a result, many of the reviews refer to various versions of the same booked. At any rate, I think the reviews are still valuable. For instance, one of the customers was very happy with the book, but they wished that it contained a fingering chart.

Of course, many people were very happy with the book—including one customer who said the book is great for students who are still learning their notes. While I haven’t personally tested out this book, I have to say that I might grab it just to see what it’s all about.

#2. The Beginning Band Fun Book (Trombone) – $

As you can probably imagine, the next book up in the list is The Beginning Band Fun Book: for Elementary Students by Larry Newman. Clearly, Larry does an excellent job with these books because he’s snagged the top two spots in our list.

As far as I can tell, this is more of an educational resource than the previous songbook. Of course, like the previous book, this book features oversized notation with note names in the note heads. Even better, you can find a copy of this book for mini pBones. How cool is that?

At any rate, reviews for The Beginning Band Fun Book are all solid. Unfortunately, they weren’t all that informative. That said, one customer had a few things nice to say about the clarinet version of the book. In particular, they felt the book did a great job for someone who didn’t have a teacher. Apparently, this book also made someone the cool grandma in their family.

If you like Larry’s books, you’ll be happy to know that there’s an intermediate collection as well. In other words, you’ll have plenty of material for awhile.

#3. Easy Pop Melodies: for Trombone – $

If you aren’t a fan of Larry’s books, you might like this collection of pop songs by Hal Leonard Corp. In this book, you’ll find 50 pop songs including:

Don’t Stop Believin’

Hey, Soul Sister

Love Story

Viva La Vida

Fireflies

And honestly, I only listed the songs that hit me with nostalgia. If you like any of these songs, you’ll probably love this book!

In terms of reviews, the opinions vary. For instance, one customer was only moderately satisfied with the book. While they found the book fun, they didn’t think the songs were very difficult—and therefore not very true to the originals. That said, I think they make a great point in that the book could be easily extended by an intermediate player.

All that said, other customers felt the book was excellent, so your mileage may vary. For instance, another customer was really happy with the size of the notes. In addition, having chord changes above measures is awesome! That’s a great way for intermediate players to get value out of this book as well.

#4. Easy Rock Instrumental Solos, Level 1: Trombone, Book & CD – $

Last but not least, we have the Easy Rock Instrumental Solos book by Bill Galliford, the Director of Instrumental Solo Strategy for Alfred Music. If you’re interested in the repertoire, this songbook features:

Boulevard of Broke Dreams

Stairway to Heaven

My Immortal

Take it Easy

And, many more!

Of course, is this songbook any good? According to the reviewers, absolutely! In fact, one of the reviewers mentioned that the book was great because the keys were all reasonable. That said, be careful! One of the reviewers felt that the book wasn’t easy enough for a beginner.

If you want to pick a book full of pop songs, perhaps the previous book is a better pick. That said, this book dives a bit more into rock songs, so that’s at least interesting.

Summary

Overall, I feel pretty good about this list. Two of the books—both books by Larry—seem to be directly targeted at children, so if you might want to opt for the other books if you’re a bit older. Otherwise, I don’t think you can really go wrong with any of these songbooks.

All that said, there were a few honorable mentions:

Easy Steps to the Band Trombone and Baritone B.c.: Trombone & Baritone B.c.

Accent on Achievement – Book 2 – Trombone – Bk+CD by Alfred

Classic Festival Solos: Trombone, Vol. 1- Piano Accompaniment

At any rate, hopefully this helped you out! If you liked this review, check out some of my other reviews:

The post 3 Best Slide Lubricants for Trombones appeared first on Trill Trombone.

Recently, I was looking to get some slide oil, but I wasn’t sure which kind to get. After all, I had been using Slide-O-Mix Rapid Comfort forever, and thought: “is that really the best?” Of course, not! But, I still wondered what my options were?

As it turns out, there are a lot of different slide lubricants out there. In terms of the top 3, the original Slide-O-Mix is the best you’re going to get. Of course, if you’re interested in trying a cream-based lubricant, Trombotine Slide Lubricant and Superslick Slickit are excellent choices.

Review Criteria

Ideally, when looking for a new slide oil or cream, you’d want to try them out. Unfortunately, that’s always practical. Instead, I like to rely on the internet to collect some data. In particular, I used Amazon to dramatically narrow my search using the following criteria:

Department: Brass Instrument Cleaning & Care Products

Average Customer Review: 4+ Stars

Search Terms: Trombone Slide Oil

As usual, I then sorted the products by average review rating to get the best reviewed products first.

3 Best Slide Lubricants

When it came to assembling this list, I just selected the top 3 slide lubricants based on my search criteria above. Then, I browsed the reviews to get an idea of what you’re going to get.

#1. Slide-O-Mix – $$

Coming out on top is the original Slide-O-Mix, a two-part lubricant mix. As you can see here, Slide-O-Mix comes with two bottles each containing a different component of the lubricant.

To use Slide-O-Mix, you apply a little bit of the small bottle followed by a more generous supply from the larger bottle. Like any other lubricant, you’ll want to move the slide around until the oil has properly coated the surface. After that, you can spritz the slide with some water. If you need more details, check out my guide on how to apply Slide-O-Mix.

Of all the oils in this list, Slide-O-Mix is the most expensive. That said, it’s certainly the most popular lubricant. In fact, some customers report that Slide-O-Mix gets better with age. In fact, some customers were so happy that they even shared their tips.

Of all the products I’ve seen on Amazon, this is probably the only one I’ve seen with a perfect score (ignoring the one 3-star review for confusion) after all these years. If that doesn’t speak to its quality, then I don’t know what will.

#2. Trombotine Trombone Slide Lubricant – $

While it might be hard to compete with Slide-O-Mix, there are a couple of excellent alternatives. For instance, you may prefer Trombotine, a cream-based lubricant for about half the price of Slide-O-Mix.

To use Trombotine, you’ll want to apply a small amount to your inner slide just like you would with most lubricants. Of course, since it’s a cream, you might need to wiggle the slide around a bit to get solid coverage. For an added bonus, spray some water on the slide, and you’ll be ready to go. If you need more details, I’ve already put together a guide for applying Trombotine.

One thing I found really interesting about Trombotine is that some folks make the argument that one tube will last you a lifetime. To be fair, I’ve gone through probably three bottles of oil in the last 13+ years, so you’re not exactly saving a ton of money by going the Trombotine route. That said, I think that’s a pretty solid claim.

In terms of reviews, everyone was pretty impressed. In fact, one customer claims they only need to reapply the Trombotine every two weeks. Apparently, even the professionals love it. Of all the reviews, the only complaints I could find were with the lack of directions.

Overall, if you’re not a fan or oil, maybe this Trombotine cream is right for you.

#3. Superslick Slickit – $

Last but not least is Superslick trombone slide cream and lubricant. If you couldn’t decide between Slide-O-Mix and Trombotine, this is sort of a best of both worlds. In this particular set, you’ll get the cream, oil, and spray bottle for just five bucks.

To use Superslick, you’ll want to apply the cream as described for Trombotine. In other words, apply a small amount of cream on the inner slide. Then, you’ll want to apply the oil as you typically would. When it’s all said and done, hit the slide with a few sprays of water, and you’ll be ready to go. Naturally, if you’re looking for details, I also have a guide on how to apply Superslick.

One thing I really like about this product is its heritage—at least according to one of the reviewers. Apparently, it’s been around awhile. As usual, I try to find a negative review or two to round out the review. In this case, most people seemed to be offput by how many steps it takes.

That said, everyone seems pretty satisfied with Superslick as well, so I figure it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Summary

When I started my search for the best slide lubricants, I never expected to find such a diverse set of products. After all, I’ve been using regular slide oil for that past 13+ years.

Fortunately, I was never really led astray as my personal choice, Slide-O-Mix Rapid Comfort, comes in at #4 on this list. Of course, now I think I’m going to make my switch to the original Slide-O-Mix. Why settle for anything less?

At any rate, thanks for taking some time to check out this review. If you’re in the market for a budget tenor trombone, I have just the review for you. Otherwise, thanks for stopping by. As always, respect the brass!

When it comes to buying a trombone on a budget, it’s hard to get the right information. Luckily, I’ve done the research and built up this list of budget tenor trombones which are under $500.

As it turns out, you can get a quite a bit of value for your money. For instance, $500 will buy you a nice pBone, various F Trigger trombones, and even some solid beginner horns with loads of accessories like tuners, gloves, and cleaning kits. It’s just a matter of finding the right tenor trombone for you.

Review Criteria

One of the best ways to find out if a budget horn is right for you is to try a few out. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any places that’ll let you actually go in and try a trombone. After all, it’s kind of gross, right? Unlike with a guitar or a drum set, you have to spit into a horn to play it.

Fortunately, there’s loads of data from consumers across the internet which we can collect to make an objective decision. In particular, I used Amazon to limit my search as follows:

Department: Trombones

Average Customer Review: 4+ Stars

Price Range: < $500

Instrument Key: B♭

Instrument Range: Tenor

From there, I sorted the trombones by average review which are listed in the following section in order.

5 Best Budget Tenor Trombones

In this section, we’ll take a look at the 5 best tenor trombones under $500. To avoid duplicates, I skipped over models that were similar—like different colored pBones.

#1. Jiggs Plastic Trombone, Blue – $

Unlike all the other trombones in this list, this one is made of plastic. As a result, it weighs just under 2 Lbs. Other than that, this horn comes with two mouthpieces, 6.5AL and 11C, and a carrying case.

In terms of verified reviews, thoughts are mixed. On one hand, some folks really like the way it looks. On the other hand, other folks didn’t care for the sound quality. Of course, a lot of people gave it a positive review just because they knew what they were getting.

All-in-all, I’d say this a pretty solid horn if you’re looking to start out. After all, it’s not a huge investment. And hey, you might just catch the music bug.

#2. Mendini MTB-31 Intermediate B♭ Tenor Slide Trombone with F Attachment – $$

For about three times the cost of a pBone, you can get a brass intermediate horn and much more. In particular, you’ll get all of the following:

F Trigger

Tuner (Cecilio 92-D)

Case

Mouthpiece (12C)

Gloves

Cleaning Cloth

And it’s all covered under a 1 year warranty against manufacturer’s defects.

Even better, most of the reviews are raving. For example, a lot of people were really impressed with the quality. Of course, there are always faults. For instance, one verified customer claimed the slide oil that it came with wasn’t great. All that said, most customers seemed to be quite content with the horn. Even a band director signed off on it.

Overall, if plastic isn’t your thing, this might be the horn for you.

#3. Eastar ETB-330 B♭ Tenor Trombone – $

If you’re still tight on cash but you don’t want a pBone, you can always forego the F trigger and pick up an Eastar ETB-330. In addition to the horn, you’ll get all of the following:

Case

Mouthpiece (7C)

Cleaning Kit

White gloves

Short and long brushes

Oil

Joint grease

In terms of reviews, a lot of beginners were really happy: Apparently, the price was a big selling point for this horn. Despite all the praise, a few customers were concerned that the horns weren’t new.

All that said, I think this is the best horn in the list by value. If you’re a beginner looking for an affordable horn, this might be the way to go.

#4. Costzon B♭ Tenor Slide Trombone – $

Like many of the other trombones in this list, this one is targeted at beginners. As a result, it comes with plenty of accessories like:

White gloves

Mouth piece

Case

In terms of reviews, many of the customers were very happy with the low barrier to entry. Of course, there were a few reviews that weren’t as nice. In particular, there appears to be some rust concerns.

That said, I think most customers would agree that the price makes up for all those issues. In other words, if you know someone just starting out, this might be the horn for them.

#5. Cecilio 3Series TB-381 Intermediate Bb Tenor Slide Trombone with F Attachment – $$$

Last but not least—and pardon the lack of a picture—we have the Cecilio 3Series TB-381 trombone. Of all the B♭ tenor trombones in this list, this one is by far the most expensive. So, what do you get? Well, here’s the breakdown:

F attachment

Mouthpiece (12C)

White gloves

Cleaning cloth

1 year warranty against manufacturer’s defects

All that said, what do the customers think? Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of reviews. However, the ones that exist are four stars and up. For example, on the high end, there are several customers that bought this horn as a gift and were very happy with their purchase.

As a matter of fact, the only negative review I could find was in regards to how the product was shipped. That said, with this horn being on the high end of the budget, I think some folks felt this horn could pass off as intermediate. If you have the money, maybe this is the right horn for you.

Summary

As you can see, when you’re looking for a trombone on a budget, you can find a few diamonds in the rough. In particular, we found five solid budget B♭ tenor trombones. Up next, we’ll take a look at some intermediate horns with price points between $500 and $2000.
